About the GMAT

What is the GMAT?

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a globally recognised, computer-based, standardised test used by almost 6,000 business school programmes (MBA, EMBA, MiM, MFin, PhD, etc) across the world as part of their selection criteria.

Should I take the GMAT?

If you are considering business education (MBA, EMBA, MiM, MFin, PhD, etc), you should take the GMAT.

If you’re serious about going to business school, the GMAT is your best first step toward a career with impact. Taking the GMAT exam shows schools that you’re serious about graduate business education.

Schools consider the GMAT an indicator of how ready you are for their program. Your GMAT scores let schools know that you can handle the rigors of the MBA program. The GMAT is not the be all and end all, but having a good score helps ease the application process.

Even after your MBA some companies will want to look at your GMAT scores.

Please refer to our GMAT Guide for more information

What is a good score?

Admissions are competitive, and hence you should aim for a high percentile rank. The percentile rank indicates the percentage of tests taken with scores lower than you for the most recent three-year period. Every year, each test taker’s score is updated with the most recent year’s percentiles.

“Good” is subjective, and the definition of a “good score” depends on your objective. Most business schools publish average scores of the admitted class. If you are from an over-represented group (e.g. Indian Male Engineer), or if you reside in a region known for higher scores (e.g. Singapore), then you should aim to score commensurately higher than these averages for your target schools.

When can I take the GMAT?

You can take the GMAT year-round. The test is administered thrice every day, except on public holidays. Candidates need to schedule their test in advance at www.mba.com

Where can I take the GMAT?

In Singapore, you may take the test at two locations:

Pearson Professional Centers

51 Cuppage Road

#05-02/03/04

Singapore 229469

NTUC Learning Hub Pte Ltd

NTUC Trade Union House

03-01 Room 3J

73 Bras Basah Road, Singapore 189556

How much does the test cost?

The test fee is US$250.

Your score is officially reported only to the schools selected by you. At the time of taking the test, you can select up to 5 schools/programmes to receive your score. You can send the scores to additional schools by paying a fee of US$28 per school.

If you need to reschedule the test, then you can get a US$200 refund/credit if you reschedule at least 7 days in advance of the scheduled date.

What is the test structure/content?

Please see our guide for more information.

How can I prepare for the test?

We are always available to help. Check out our GMAT Prep Courses.

What will I need on the test day?

You will need to present your passport as your identification at the test centre. A national Identity Card, Driving License, Employment Pass, etc would not suffice.

You may take some fruit (chocolate, energy bar, banana, etc) and drink (water, energy drink, etc) to replenish your energy during the breaks. The centre shall allocate you a locker in which you may store these during the test.

You will not be allowed to take anything with you into the test room. Expect to leave your keys, phone, MRT pass, pens, pencils, wallet, etc in the locker for the duration of the exam.

Can I take the test again if I didn't do well?

You can take the test again, but must wait at least 16 days.At the end of the test, you can preview your unofficial score.

If you feel that the score is not per your capability and expectation, you can choose to cancel the test record. This will remove the test from your reported record. Cancellation is possible only in the few minutes after taking the test, while you are still at the test centre.

If you change your mind after cancelling the test, you can reinstate your test record within 60 days of the test date for a fee of US$100.

If I take the test more than once, will the schools know that I have done so?

GMAC does not send your scores to anyone unless you ask it to. It will send your score only to the schools that you designate.

If you ask GMAC to send your score to School A, then School A will receive your complete test record till that date. This means all your previous test scores from the past five years would be included in the report sent to School A.

If you take the GMAT again in the future, your new score will not be automatically sent to School A. Only if upon taking the test again you choose School A as one of the recipient, would School A receive your new score (alongwith your older scores).

If you cancel a test score, then that test is removed from your record and neither your score nor the information that you cancelled it will be sent to the schools.

I have a documented disability. Are there any accommodations in the GMAT?

If you believe you have a disability that prevents you from taking the GMAT under standard conditions, you may request accommodations.

A decision regarding your accommodation request may take up to three to four weeks. You must apply for and receive an accommodation decision before scheduling your test date.

For more information, refer to the official GMAT website.

About GMAT Preparation

How can I prepare for the test?

Please refer to our GMAT Prep Course page for more information.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

The duration of preparation required depends on multiple factors:

  • Your target level of performance
  • Your initial level of performance
  • Number of hours you can devote to preparation every week
  • Speed at which you internalize the concepts and approach

Most working professionals spend 3-5 months preparing for the GMAT, though we have seen people take significantly less and significantly more as well.

When are the classes conducted?

Individual classes are scheduled as per the student’s convenience, subject to availability. All Concept Classes are conducted every weekend. Since most of our customers work during the week, our group classes are held on weekends.

Quantitative and Verbal Concept Classes:

  • Saturday morning (9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.)
  • Saturday afternoon (2.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.)
  • Sunday morning (9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.)
  • Sunday afternoon (2.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.)

AWA and IR Concept Classes:

  • Saturday evening (7 p.m. to 10 p.m.)
  • Sunday evening (7 p.m. to 10 p.m.)

What is the course fee?

There are 3 different course settings – Individual, Group and Hybrid. Consult us to find out more.

Is the Group course enough?

Most of our students opt for the Hybrid course, which remains far and away our most popular and successful offering. The Hybrid combines the “unlimited group membership” and some heavily discounted individual hours that focus on each student’s particular weaknesses.

When in doubt, you should go for the Hybrid course since it comes with a refund policy: if, for whatever reason, you don’t use the individual hours that you’ve purchased, you get the money back. We only charge you if you use the classes.

I am considering individual/hybrid course. How many individual hours should I buy?

It can be difficult to assess upfront how many hours you may need. That’s why we offer a refund guarantee on unused individual hours.

Buy the maximum number of hours your budget permits, because the more hours you buy upfront, the higher the discount you get.

If at the end, you find you haven’t used up all the hours you bought, that’s not a problem. You can downgrade to a smaller package, and get a refund for the difference. In other words, you can downsize to the basic Hybrid any time (whereas upsizing later is more expensive)

What happens if I miss a group course session?

We’re different. When you register for a group course, you get unlimited access to all our group classes, in all our groups. It’s less of a purchase and more of a membership. Attend the same class as many times as you need to grasp the concepts completely!

We start new GMAT group course “batches” every weekend, so you have the opportunity to attend a “make-up” class with another group at no additional charge.

We recommend that students do their best to attend each class but we also do understand that GMAT test takers have a number of other responsibilities and will thus do our best to accommodate your unique circumstances.

If you tell us your restrictions (e.g. “I can only come on Sun mornings” OR “I need to finish in two months” OR “I want to have a class once a month for the next 1 year”), we will come up with a personalised timetable for you.

Will you cover all the question types I find difficult?

Of course! Our course designers come from various academic backgrounds – business, law, physics, mathematics – and have formulated specific frameworks to help you analyze, understand and answer all the GMAT question types. Hence, regardless of your background, this course has the right ingredients to help you overcome your weaknesses and ace the test.

How much work must I do on my own?

In order for you to get a 700+ score, we need you to work – but we prefer you to work smart. There will be work for you to do at home (online) with the specific purpose of getting you used to the concepts and techniques we cover. As much online simulation (preferably under time pressure) is what you need – and this is what we have planned for you.

Have the course designers and tutors themselves aced the test?

Our course designers and tutors have scored in excess of 700 on the GMAT. They are also passionate about bringing a fresh look to GMAT coaching and teaching you the right techniques.
